Mets: Yoenis Cespedes Believes He Too Can Hit 52 Home Runs

Without question, the New York Mets will field one of the most interesting teams on paper in 2020. Of course this includes the likes of Pete Alonso, who hit 53 home runs during his rookie season. Still, the forgotten man amongst the Metropolitans is a guy in Yoenis Cespedes who has played just 81 games in 2017, then 38 in 2018. Finally in 2019, he didn’t play at all.

Cespedes was the topic on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM. The talk was all about what he’s still capable of when 2020 begins.

This is through Eduardo Perez:

“He’s hungry. Just imagine if you do add a Yoenis Cespedes, he said I’m ready and I’m not gonna just hit 40 home runs. He said I will be out there 140-plus games. Can the legs take it? They haven’t been out there in two years consistently. I think Yoenis is going to show in Spring Training if he’s healthy or not. Could he be a trade chip to move to an American League team that needs a DH? I think it’s a big risk on that aspect of the whole thing. Verbally he told me he could hit 52 [home runs], his number.”

Without question, that’s probably a stretch. We would be shocked to see Cespedes reach 100 games or 30 home runs at this juncture. Still, if you’re a fantasy owner with some late-round flyer picks and he looks ripe in spring; he’s probably worth a flyer.
